Jan. 23, 2021 – Prior to the race in St. Moritz, neither Kaillie Humphries or Elana Meyers Taylor had ever put down a competitive run in a Women’s Monobob World Series monobob sled, but you’d never know by the results. Humphries won her second straight Monobob World Series race, with Meyers Taylor making it a United States one-two in second.
Humphries led Germany’s Stephanie Schneider by three tenths of a second going into the second heat, with Meyers Taylor just behind in third, .03 behind Schneider. Meyers Taylor’s second run was nearly identical to her first, while Schneider struggled on the second half of her run to fall behind the American, guaranteeing a gold medal for the United States.
That left only Kaillie Humphries, and the American was again nearly perfect on her run. While the timing had the two Americans close halfway through the run, Humphries pulled away late to win by over .6, while Meyers Taylor finished with her first Women’s Monobob World Series silver medal.
Stephanie Schneider finished third for her second straight top four.
South Korea’s Yooran Kim came into the race as a relative unknown at the top tier of sliding, with just four World Cup starts. But Kim has a pile of starts at the North American Cup level, including a NAC championship in the 2017/2018 season, and that experience showed with a fourth place finish in her first Monobob World Series start.
Melissa Lotholz made her first start on the World Cup stage as a bobsled pilot with a fifth place finish after entering the second heat tied with Great Britain’s Mica McNeill and teammate Cynthia Appiah for eighth. McNeill finished one spot back in sixth.
Canada had a real mixed bag of a race in the Women’s Monobob World Series. Behind Lotholz’s top five finish, Christine de Bruin finished seventh, just .02 out of the top six. Teammate Cynthia Appiah smashed the start record in the first heat but couldn’t put two runs together, she finished tied with Russia’s Nadezhda Sergeeva for 11th.
