From Oberhof, GER
(Dec. 12, 2020) – Toni Eggert & Sascha Benecken cruised to victory on home ice in Oberhof, setting the fast time in both heats on their way to FIL Eberspächer World Cup gold.
The German duo set a new track record on the recently renovated track in Oberhof on their way to a .155 second victory over the Austrian team of Thomas Steu & Lorenz Koller.
The win was the first for Eggert & Benecken on the season. It also ties them with teammate Tobias Wendl & Tobias Arlt for most career World Cup victories with 44.
Steu & Koller, winners of the first three races on the season, had a few small mistakes in their first run that left them in fourth place. Their second run was better and faster than everyone but Eggert & Benecken, and that was enough to move them into second for their fourth straight World Cup medal.
Teammates Yannick Müller & Armin Frauscher finished third, just .041 out of silver after entering the second heat in second place.
The Italian teams of Ludwig Rieder & Patrick Rastner and Emanuel Rieder & Simon Kainzwaldner finished fourth and fifth after finishing the first heat in seventh and ninth, respectively, while Latvians Andris Sics & Juris Sics rounded out the top six.
Wendl and Arlt crashed in their first heat and finished 18th.
In both the overall World Cup points and the new “full races only” classification Steu & Koller lead over Eggert & Benecken and Müller & Frauscher.
Due to various COVID-19 travel restrictions, the United States and Canada are both sitting out the first portion of the season and will join the tour after the holiday break
