FIL World Cup Sprint Results – Igls

(Nov. 29, 2020) – The first Sprint World Cup race of the season was held in the opening weekend of the season in Igls. Below are the results.

Men’s Luge

Felix Loch backed up his World Cup victory on Saturday with another victory on Sunday in the Sprint World Cup. Loch was the quickest by the second intermediate split and held on at the finish to hold off Olympic gold medalist David Gleirscher by .088.

Gleirscher finished second, and was joined on the podium by Austrian teammate Jonas Müller in third, just .091 back.

Italy’s Dominik and Kevin Fischnaller finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while Germany’s Johannes Ludwig rounded out the top six.

Doubles Luge

Thomas Steu & Lorenz Koller backed up their gold medal on Saturday with another one on Sunday in the Sprint competition. The Austrians were the fastest at the start and at the bottom on their way to a .091 victory over Andris & Juris Sics.

The Sics cousins finished 14th in the World Cup race the day before, but came back strong in the Sprint race. They took silver after sitting in the leaders box for 13 sleds, until the Austrians came down to edge the Latvians for gold.

Italians Ludwig Rieder & Patrick Rastner finished third, just ahead of teammates Emanuel Rieder & Simon Kainzwaldner in fourth.

German teams Tobias Wendl & Tobias Arlt and Hannes Orlamünder & Paul Gubitz finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

Women’s Luge

The full-field women’s luge race saw Julia Taubitz beat out Natalie Geisenberger and Dajana Eitberger as part of a German sweep of the podium. In the Sprint event it was more of the same, with Taubitz beating out Geisenberger and Eitberger again.

The gold for Taubitz was her third in one day, having won the World Cup race and Team Relay race earlier in the day.

Eliza Tiruma held the lead as the fourth sled down all the way until the final three Germans all came down ahead of her, giving her a fourth place finish. Austrians Hannah Prock and Madeleine Egle finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
