From Lake Placid, USA
Jan. 24, 2020 – Christopher Grotheer won his third gold medal of the 2019/2020 IBSF Intercontinental Cup season, beating Martin Rosenberger and Craig Thompson for the top spot.
Grotheer and Thompson came into the second heat tied for the lead, with the United States’ Daniel Barefoot just behind in third. On that second run Barefoot set what would be the fifth fastest run of the heat, falling behind Martin Rosenberger. Thompson also could not keep up with the German’s time. Grotheer, though, edged out Rosenberger with the fastest time of the second run and a combined time that was .2 faster than his German teammate.
Rosenberger edged out Thompson by .02 for the silver medal, while Thompson won his second medal in two days with a bronze.
Barefoot finished fourth, well ahead of Egor Veselov in fifth, while Stephen Garbett finished sixth on home ice.
Mike Rogals came one spot short of putting all three American sleds in the top ten with an 11th place finish, one spot behind Great Britain’s Stefan Squire in tenth.
Dave Greszczyszyn was the top Canadian in 13th. Teammate Blake Enzie finished 16th, while Mark Lynch rounded out the Canadian effort in 20th.
Grotheer leaves Lake Placid as the ICC point leader, over 100 points ahead of Wenhao Chen of China. Veselov is third, 22 points behind Chen.
