Dec. 19, 2019 – Breeana Walker and Qing Ying tied for gold in the second European women’s monobob race of the 2019/2020 IBSF season.
Both Walker and Ying came into the second heat behind Canadian Cynthia Appiah, and found themselves tied for second with only Appiah’s run to go. The Canadian had trouble halfway down her second run, and fell to 14th, giving Walker and Ying the win.
The gold for Walker was her third in five monobob races, while Ying’s was her first monobob gold and second overall (Calgary women’s bobsled, Nov. 2017). Walker has never finished outside of the top four in monobob competition.
Canadian Melissa Lotholz finished third overall, only .02 out of gold. She was second fastest (behind only Appiah) off the top in both heats, and jumped up from sixth in the first heat to win bronze.
French slider Margo Boch finished in fourth, just .08 ahead of Australian Ashleigh Werner and .12 ahead of Candian Kori Hol, who finished fifth and sixth respectively.
The fifth place for Werner comes in her first trip to Europe as a pilot.
Canada placed all of their pilots in the top 15. Behind Lotholz ad Hol’s runs, Bianca Ribi missed out on a top ten by just .04 to finish 11th, and Cynthia Appiah finished 14th after leading the first heat on the strength of the two fastest pushes of the competition.
Felicity Bee led the way for Great Britain with a 16th place run in her second IBSF event. Teammates Joanne Ellett and Isabella Burke finished 20th and 27th, respectively.
Austria’s Kati Beierl finished seventh in her first career monobob race.
