From Königssee, GER
Dec. 15, 2019 – Amedeo Bagnis became the first Italian to win men’s skeleton gold in European Cup in over a half a decade, beating a massive field in Königssee.
Bagnis was the quickest off the top in both heats, and held a .37 second lead over Russian Vladislav Semenov going into the second heat of competition. On that second run both Bagnis and Semenov failed to match their first run efforts, but Bagnis carried enough of a lead to hold off Germany’s Cedric Renner by .13 to win gold.
Bagnis had never finished in the top ten in any IBSF competition since his first race in November of 2018, with a career best of 11th in Winterberg to start the 2019/2020 season.
Krists Netlaus jumped up from fifth to win bronze for Latvia, edging out Germany’s Felix Seibel by .02 for the spot. Seibel’s second heat run tied for the fastest of the competition with Bagnis’ first run.
Lukas Nydegger finished fifth for Germany, while Vladislav Semenov fell from second to sixth in the second heat.
The United States’ Austin McCrary was the lone American in the field, he moved up from 13th to finish 12th in the 41 sled field.
Ben Fulker led the way for Great Britain with a 13th place run, jumping up from 15th. Matt Weston and Laurence Bostock finished 21st and 23rd to round out the British effort.
