From Sochi, RUS
(Feb. 23, 2019) – Aleksandr Denisev & Vladislav Antonov had never won a World Cup medal, and had a career best top-level racing finish of fifth at the 2014 Olympic Games. On the same ice as that career-best finish, the Russian duo won their first ever World Cup gold medal.
The Russian duo came into the second heat well out of medal contention in sixth. They threw down a great second run, the fastest of the race, to put pressure on those ahead of them. One by one, each team fell behind the Russian duo, until their teammates Vsevolod Kashkin & Konstantin Korshunov came down with an eighth-quickest run of the heat to fall to third and give Denisev & Antonov the victory.
Toni Eggert & Sascha Benecken finished second in the race, with Kashkin & Korshunov hanging on to win bronze.
Vladislav Yuzhakov & Iurii Prokhorov finished fourth to help put all three Russian teams in the top four, with Andris & Juris Sics fifth and Thomas Steu & Lorenz Koller sixth.
The second place finish, coupled with the sixth for Steu & Koller, was enough to clinch the overall World Cup title for Eggert & Benecken with the Sprint World Cup race to come tomorrow.
The American duo of Chris Mazdzer & Jayson Terdiman missed the season finale as Mazdzer had gone back to New York to have shoulder surgery.
