From Altenberg, GER
(Feb. 2, 2019) – Thomas Steu & Lorenz Koller edged out world champions Toni Eggert & Sascha Benecken to win gold in Altenberg.
On a German track that’s considered one of the toughest on tour, the Austrian team held a .039 second advantage over Eggert & Benecken going into the second run. On the second run it was even closer, with Steu & Koller edging out Eggert & Benecken by .004 on that run and .043 in total to win gold.
The two teams were far and away better than anyone else in the race, with Eggert & Benecken winning silver, over .3 seconds ahead of the Latvian team of Andris & Juris Sics.
The teams of Robin Geueke & David Gamm, Ivan Nagler & Fabian Malleier, and Ludwig Rieder & Patrick Rastner rounded out the top six.
Tobias Wendl & Tobias Arlt came into the day as one of the favorites for gold. A crash at the start sank their first run, though they were able to recover and finish their run. They finished 2.8 seconds behind the leaders in 19th.
The American duo of Chris Mazdzer and Jayson Terdiman finished with another top ten in ninth place. Mazdzer, still recovering from a neck injury, is only competing in the doubles portion of the weekend’s racing and skipping the men’s singles races.
Canadians Tristan Walker & Justin Snith finished just outside of the top ten in 11th.
