From Winterberg, GER
(Nov. 23, 2018) – Olympic bronze medalist Laura Deas won gold in Winterberg, her first ever in Intercontinental Cup competition.
The British slider was the quickest in both heats on her way to a .3 second victory over 2014/2015 World Cup champion Janine Flock. Deas held a slim advantage over Flock going into the second heat, but pulled away on her second run to take the gold.
Flock finished with a silver medal, just ahead of Czech Republic’s Anna Fernstädt, who finished in the bronze position.
The gold medal is the first ever for Deas in ICC. She has two silver medals to go with her gold to start the 2018/2019 ICC season, and her only other gold medal was a .04 second victory over Tina Hermann in Altenberg on November 27, 2015.
Deas’s teammate Ashleigh Pittaway finished fourth, just .03 out of the medals, while Kim Meylemans and Susanne Kreher finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
Megan Henry led the way for the United States in eighth place. Teammates Samantha Culiver McQuade and Veronica Day both finished in the top 20, with Culiver McQuade in 17th and Day in 20th.
The Canadian contingent was led by Lanette Prediger in 16th. Madi Charney finished 18th, and Jaclyn LaBerge 23rd.
Brogan Crowley finished 14th for Great Britain, while Australia’s Jackie Narracott finished ninth in her first race of the 2018/2019 season.
