Feb. 11, 2018 – Thomas Kammerlander won his second European Championship in as many attempts, taking gold by .25 over Alex Gruber.
The Austrian was quick everywhere, and carried a .17 second advantage over Gruber going into the second heat.
Gruber’s second trip down was faster than everyone who’d been down the hill so far. Kammerlander’s run was clean and quick enough to hold off the Italian and win gold.
Gruber held on for silver, while doubles European champion Patrick Pigneter finished with a bronze medal.
It was the third successful European Championships for Kammerlander in a row. He won silver in the 2014 European Championships, but since then has won in 2016 and 2018. The Euro Champs runs on even-numbered years, while World Championships run on odd-numbered years.
Pigneter’s doubles teammate, Florian Clara, finished fourth, just .13 out of a medal, while Florian Glatzl and Michael Scheikl of Austria finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
British teammates Joshua Reeves and Dex Unwin finished 23rd and 24th, respectively.
