From Altenberg, GER
(Dec. 2, 2017) The German duo of Toni Eggert & Sascha Benecken won their third straight FIL World Cup event, this time edging Austrians Peter Penz & Georg Fischler in the process.
Eggert & Benecken were the quickest duo in both heats on the strength of stronger starts than anyone else in the top five and nearly flawless bottom halves of the Altenberg track. Neither Penz & Fischler or Robin Geueke & David Gamm could match Eggert & Benecken’s starts, and while Geueke & Gamm had a second-fastest final run, it wasn’t nearly enough to keep up with the gold medalists.
Sprint World Cup winners Tobias Wendl & Tobias Arlt finished fourth, only .003 out of the medals. Oskars Gudramovics & Peters Kalninis of Latvia finished fifth, while Ivan Nagler and Fabian Malleier of Italy finished a career-best sixth.
Americans Matt Mortensen & Jayson Terdiman struggled in their first run, but jumped four spots to finished 11th in their second run with the fifth best time in the second heat. Teammates Jacob Hyrns & Anthony Espinoza finished 15th, while Justin Krewson & Andrew Sherk finished 20th.
Canadians Tristan Walker & Justin Snith finished 22nd.
