From Innsbruck, AUT
(Nov. 18, 2017) As it was for the entirety of the 2016/2017 FIL World Cup, there was a German duo atop the doubles luge podium.
The team of Toni Eggert & Sascha Benecken took gold in convincing fashion, beating Italians Ludwig Rieder & Patrick Rastner by .178 and German teammate Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt by over .4.
The team of Penz & Fischler finished fourth, setting a start record in their first heat. Their second run was only 12th quickest, however, and they failed to move up in that second run. Denisev & Antonov of Russia also struggled in their second run, hanging on to fifth place, while Oberstolz & Gruber of Italy finished sixth.
Americans Krewson & Sherk came into their second run in seventh, but much like other teams, ran into problems in their second run. That run was 17th fastest, dropping them to 13th overall, one spot ahead of teammates Hyrns & Espinoza. Mortensen & Terdiman finished 23rd to round out the American effort.
Canadians Walker & Snith ran into trouble at the bottom of their first heat, coming down 22nd. Their second run was the third quickest of the field, but it wasn’t enough to overcome their first run deficit.
