Toni Eggert & Sascha Benecken finished their dominance of the 2016/2017 FIL doubles division with a win on a track where the hold both the start and track records.
The Germans were fastest in both heats by a substantial margin, winning the race by over three tenths. The win is their ninth on the season, and their 12th podium in 12 races.
Matt Mortensen & Jayson Terdiman came into their final run in third place, one tenth out of a silver medal. The Americans out-paced the German duo of Robin Geueke & David Gamm on their second run to move up to second, while Geueke & Gamm held onto third.
The silver medal for Mortensen & Terdiman ties a season best for the American duo (Lake Placid being the other).
The Latvian team of Andris & Juris Sics finished fourth, while Thomas Steu & Lorenz Koller of Austria finished fifth. Jacob Hyrns & Anthony Espinoza of the United States finished a season-best sixth.
Canadians Tristan Walker & Justin Snith finished eighth in their final doubles race of the season, while Justin Krewson & Andrew Sherk finished 12th for the United States.
Eggert & Benecken had already secured the World Cup title coming into Altenberg, and they finish the season ahead of teammates Tobias Wendl & Tobias Arlt. The two teams accounted for every gold medal in the World Cup for the 2016/2017 season. Mortensen & Terdiman of the United States finished third overall, just three points ahead of Geueke & Gamm.
