The German team of Toni Eggert & Sascha Benecken have been all but entirely dominant during the 2016/2017 FIL World Cup season, and on a new track in South Korea they once again showed why they’re currently the best in the business.
Despite a relatively bumpy second run for the German duo, Eggert & Benecken set the fast time in both heats on their way to a .2 second lead over teammates Tobias Wendl & Tobias Arlt. The team of Eggert & Benecken also will hold the track record going into the 2018 Olympic Games.
With their win, Eggert & Benecken also clinched the overall World Cup title, leaving PyeongChang with a lead of 182 points over Wendl & Arlt.
Robin Geueke &* David Gamm helped make it a sweep of the PeyongChang doubles podium, moving up from fifth in the first run to third in the second. Austrian teams of Penz & Fischler and Steu & Koller both came into the second run contending for medals, but both struggled to make it down the Korean track clean, finishing fourth and fifth respectively.
The Canadian duo of Tristan Walker & Justin Snith finished sixth, one spot ahead of the American team of Matt Mortensen & Jayson Terdiman. Jacob Hyrns & Anthony Espinoza finished ninth, while Justin Krewson & Andrew Sherk rounded out the American effort with a 14th place finish.
