2016/2017 FIL World Cup – Men’s Luge – Race 7

From Oberhof, GER

Oberhof is arguably the toughest course on the FIL World Cup tour for those who didn’t grow up sliding on it. On Saturday, the Germans showed that nobody’s better on their home ice but them.

Felix Loch was the quickest in the first heat, and held on in his second run despite a great run by Russian Roman Repilov to make it close. Repilov came into the second heat in third behind Loch and Loch’s teammate Andi Langenhan. Repilov put the pressure on Loch, but Loch is great in Oberhof, and used his knowledge of the tight German course to take gold, just .04 ahead of Repilov.

Repilov was the only non-German in the top five. Langenhan finished third, ahead of Johannes Ludwig and Ralf Palik, who rounded out the top five. Nations Cup qualifier Sebastian Bley finished tied for eighth to put all five German sleds in the top five.

The bulk of the United States sliders would rather forget Oberhof. Tucker West finished 12th as the top-scoring American, ahead of Chris Mazdzer and Taylor Morris, who finished 14th and 22nd respectively.

Samuel Edney led the way for Canada in 17th, ahead of Mitchel Malyk in 28th and Nicholas Klimchuk-Brown in 32nd. The Oberhof race was the first World Cup start for Klimchhuk-Brown.
