2017 FIL World Championships – Women’s Luge

From Igls, AUT

Germany may have set the fast time in both heats of women’s luge, but it was a strong North American showing that filled up the bulk of the podium.

Tatjana Hüfner set the fast time in the first heat, and was the quickest of the contenders in the second heat to take gold. The battle for silver behind her, though, was a tight one between the United States and Canada.

Canada’s Kimberley McRae came into the second heat in tenth, but put down a quick second run to start moving up the leaderboard, passing teammate Alex Gough, American Summer Britcher, among others. It wasn’t until Erin Hamlin’s second run that McRae got bumped from the top of the podium, with just Hüfner to go. Hüfner cruised to victory, with Hamlin taking silver, and McRae bronze.

Summer Britcher and Alex Gough finished fourth and fifth, helping put North Americans from second to fifth. German Natalie Geisenberger moved up from 17th in the first heat to sixth after the second heat on the strength of a heat-fastest run.

Emily Sweeney wasn’t able to backup her sprint competition success in the full course race, finishing back in 15th, one spot ahead of teammate Raychel Germaine.
