2016/2017 FIL World Cup – Team Relay – Race 3

From Sigulda, LAT

Russia had been atop or near the top of every podium in Sigulda this season, but Germany has been the dominant force in the FIL Team Relay. Something had to give in Sigulda, and it did, but just barely.

Russia did take gold ahead of Germany, but only by .017, making it one of the closest Team Relays in history. The German squad could never get ahead of Russia at any of the timing lines, and at one point was over three tenths back. The doubles team of Eggert & Benecken did their best to reel in the Russians, but in the end needed just a little more help than they received.

Latvia had struggled to find speed on its home ice for the bulk of the race weekend, but closed the weekend out with a bronze medal. The United States finished fourth, ahead of Austria and Canada, who rounded out the top six.

The race was marred by two crashes: One by Romania and one by Poland, while the Czech Republic failed to hit the paddle on their first pass, leading to a disqualification.
