From Calgary, CAN
IBSF Intercontinental Cup results for race 5 on the men’s skeleton calendar, held January 12, 2017.
Russia almost scored a sweep of the podium, with one British slider mixing his way into the party.
Egor Veselov had the quickest run in the first heat, but had some problems in the second heat, leaving the door open for Pavel Kulikov. Kulikov, who came into the second heat fifth, put down the quickest run of the race. It wasn’t enough for Kulilov, however, and Veselov held on to win by a mere .06. Kulikov settled for silver.
The battle for bronze resulted in a tie, with Jeremy Rice putting down the second fastest run of the second heat to even things up with Vladislav Marchenkov. Joseph Cecchini finished fifth for Italy, while Austrian Alexander Auer finished sixth.
Calgary proved to be a challenge for the United States, with Michael Rogals leading the way back in 13th place. Kyle Brown finished 18th, while Greg West missed the seconnd heat in 21st.
It was an equally tough go of it for Canada, with only one slider finding his way into the top ten. Evan Neufeldt came into the second heat in ninth, but dropped one spot to tenth after his second run. Teammates Patrick Rooney and Paul Fraser finished just behind him in 11th and 12th respectively.
For Great Britain, however, the fifth race of the ICC season could be considered quite a success. Team GB left with a bronze medal, and all three athletes in the top ten. Aside from Rice’s medal, Kenny Howard finished eighth, one spot ahead of teammate Marcus Wyatt.
AJ Edelman finished 19th for Israel’s best point result of the season.
