2016/2017 FIL Natural Track World Cup – Doubles Luge – Race 2

From Latsch, ITA

Since the second weekend of January, 2015, Patrick Pigneter and Florian Clara have dominated the Natural Track doubles circuit, to the point that literally nobody else has won. The last team to have beaten them were the Russian duo of Aleksandr Egorov and Petr Popov. Since then, the Italians have won 11 races in a row.

That streak ended in Latsch.

The Austrian team of Rupert Brueggler & Tobias Angerer set the fastest time in the first run, while Pigneter & Clara “struggled”. The Italian duo came down with the third fastest time in the first heat, .11 behind the Austrians.

On the second run, Pigneter & Clara charged back, setting the fastest time in the process. Bruegler & Angerer held on though, and were able to finish their second run .07 ahead of the Italians to take gold.

Pigneter & Clara finished well ahead of bronze medalists Pavel Porshnev & Ivan Lazarev of Russia. Austrians Christoph Regensburger & Dominik Holzknecht finished fourth, ahead of teammates Christian & Andreas Schopf, wihle Egorov & Popov finished sixth.

The gold medal for the Austrians is the first for anyone since January 4, 2015 in Laas, and the first for an Austrian team since December 21, 2013 in Novouralks to kick off the 2013/2014 season. It was just the second loss in that time for Pigneter & Clara.

The British duo of Dex Unwin & Joshua Reeves finished 11th.
