From Winterberg, GER
Germany owned the day at Winterberg.
The team of Toni Eggert & Sascha Benecken set both the start record and track record on their first run on their way to a dominant victory in the first race of the 2016/2017 FIL World Cup season, breaking their own record again on their second run.
Robin Geueke & David Gamm score their first ever World Cup medal with two consistent runs on their home track for a silver medal, after Tobias Wendl & Tobias Arlt broke a strap at the start for a very lackluster second run. Wendl & Arlt held on for a bronze medal for the second German sweep of the day.
The Latvian team of Andris and Juris Sics finished just off the podium in fourth, with Italians Ludwig Rieder & Patrick Rastner finishing fifth. Americans Matt Mortensen & Jayson Terdiman finished sixth with a very strong run on the bottom half of the Winterberg track.
The Canadian team of Tristan Walker & Justin Snith finished seventh on the strength of a monster start and a very clean run, while Americans Jacob Hyrns & Anthony Espinoza finished 15th. Hyrns & Espinoza’s finish placed both American teams in Sunday’s Sprint World Cup race.
