From Königssee, GER
Maxmilian Arndt is a hard man to beat in four-man bobsled, and in Königssee he’s even more difficult. A great run by upstart Benjamin Maier put the pressure on Arndt, but the German pilot held on for victory in the final race of the 2015/2016 IBSF World Cup season.
Benjamin Mair proved on German ice that his late season push wasn’t a fluke. Maier had the second fastest run in each heat, only slower than Arndt, keeping well ahead of Francesco Friedrich, who finished with a bronze medal.
Nico Walther made it three German sleds in the top four, holding off a second run charge by Latvian World Champion Oskars Melbardis to take fifth. Swiss pilot Rico Peter finished sixth.
Max Arndt’s win was mostly just a victory lap for the World Cup title. Arndt just needed a 15th place finish to win the overall title, ahead of teammate Francesco Friedrich. Peter, Walther, Alexander Kasjanov and Justin Kripps round out the top six.
A disappointing four-man season for Steven Holcomb ended with a 16th place finish for the American. Holcomb fought through injury throughout the season, and struggled to find time with his team’s starts in both two and four-man.
Justin Kripps was the top finishing Canadian with a tenth place finish. Kripps came into the second run tied with John Jackson of Great Britain, and despite some trouble on the load, Kripps held on for tenth, with Jackson finishing 11th.
Chris Spring finished 18th in the second Canadian effort, while Lamin Deen finished one spot behind in 19th in the second British effort. Deen was piloting a different sled than the one he drove so well over most of the four-man season.
Loic Costerg finished a season-best eighth for France.
