From St. Moritz, SUI
Consistency is key in four-man bobsled, and this season there’s been nobody as consistent as German Max Arndt. Despite some falling snow, Arndt’s team pushed strong, and Arndt was as clean as he needed to be to take gold in St. Moritz.
The biggest surprise of the race was two consistent runs by Benjamin Maier. The Austrian came into the second run in fifth, but moved up to the silver medal position, just ahead of Latvian Oskars Melbardis.
For once, Germany was marginally on the losing side of some mid-race snow, with Francesco Friedrich and Nico Walther both missing out on medals in fourth and fifth respectively, while Latvian Oskars Kibermanis finishing a season-best sixth.
Steven Holcomb continued to struggle to find speed in his four-man sled. The American’s four-man team had a strong push and seemingly very clean second run, but finished 15th.
American Nick Cunningham finished 22nd and missed the second run after a snow-covered run seemingly cost him some time. Same went for Lamin Deen of Great Britain, who started two spots ahead of Cunningham, and finished 21st.
Justin Kripps was the top-finishing Canadian in 11th. Chris Spring raced four-man in a borrowed sled, finishing 26th for Canada, while teammate Kaillie Humphries finished 28th.
John Jackson finished 19th for Great Britain.
