From St. Moritz, SUI
Sungbin Yun has been knocking on the door for a gold medal for quite some time, scoring podium after podium, only being beaten by a few of the biggest names in skeleton racing for quite some time. In St. Moritz, it was finally his turn.
On a track where the ashes of former Korean (and really everyone’s) coach Gomer Lloyd were scattered earlier in the day, Sungbin Yun put down a competitive first run, less than .2 behind the Dukurs brothers, who came into the second run separated by only .01.
Yun’s second run was perfect. Tomass Dukurs came down next, with just a small skid below the Horseshoe curve scrubbing off enough speed to keep Yun in first. The final slider down was Martins Dukurs, who came into St. Moritz undefeated on the season. The normally flawless-Dukurs also had just a couple of small mistakes, finishing tied with brother Tomass, and just behind Yun.
Russians Nikita Tregybov and Alexander Tretiakov finished fourth and fifth, respectively, with Tretiakov setting the season’s start record. Kilian von Schleinitz came from 13th in the first heat to finish sixth.
For the European Championships, the Dukurs Brothers finished tied for gold, with Nikita Tregybov taking bronze.
Kyle Brown was the top-finishing North American in ninth, while teammate Matt Antoine had a skid at the top of his second run that moved him back to a tie for 15th with Canadian Barrett Martineau. Dave Greszczyszyn finished 18th to round out the Canadian effort.
Dom Parsons finished 11th for Great Britain, while teammates Kenny Howard and David Swift finished 23rd and 24th, respectively.
