From Whistler, CAN
It’s been a tough season for the Canadian men’s bobsled program, with an occasional medal, but nothing to really write home about. In the second two-man race of the weekend at Whistler, that all changed.
Chris Spring came into his second run just .04 behind Russian Alexander Kasjanov, and seemingly needed a perfect run on a track that had seen three crashes in the two-man race alone (plus one in the women’s bobsled earlier in the day). Spring didn’t disappoint, throwing down as near of a perfect run as anyone could have asked for to put the pressure on the Russian. Kasjanov slipped up early, hitting the wall at the top and scrubbing away any chance of taking gold. That gave Chris Spring a gold medal in the final race in Whistler for the weekend. The wall-hit of Kasjanov cost him two spots, as Ugis Zalims slipped up to second place for Latvia, and Kasjanov took bronze.
Oskars Melbardis continues to work back from a back injury that cost him two weekends of action to finish fourth, while Spring’s teammate Justin Kripps finished fifth. German Nico Walther finished sixth.
The second two-man race was nothing short of disappointing for the Americans. Steven Holcomb’s suffered a major mistake at the top of his second run, moving him from sixth to 12th. Nick Cunningham finished 19th after flipping his sled in the exit of the 50/50 turn, and Dakarai Kongela finished 20th, missing the second heat.
Heath Spence took 17th in the lone Australian effort.
