From Lake Placid, USA
Home ice can be an important factor in a sliding race sometimes, and it couldn’t have been any bigger for the Americans in Lake Placid.
Chris Mazdzer won his first ever FIL World Cup gold medal in Race 2 of the season in Lake Placid, ahead of last year’s Lake Placid winner Tucker West. The one-two for the Americans marks the first time in men’s luge that the United States has taken the top two spots in the top tier of the sport.
Wolfgang Kindl finished third for Austria, which managed to keep the Germans off the podium. Germany took the next four spots, however, with von Schleinitz leading Palik, Loch and Ludwig for the top seven.
A rough 2015/2016 season (by his standards) continued for Felix Loch. Loch, who was disqualified for being too heavy in Igls, came into the second run as the leader, and through most of his run it looked like a Lake Placid victory lap for the German. Toward the bottom, things fell apart, and Loch’s time was only good enough for 13th fastest and sixth overall.
It was a banner day for the Americans all around. Aside from Mazdzer and West, Aidan Kelly finished eighth (right behind all four Germans) and Taylor Morris 11th. Mitchel Malyk was the top-finishing American in 22nd, teammate John Fennell finished 25th.
