From Altenberg, GER
The first race of the season for the IBSF World Cup was women’s skeleton from Altenberg, and it was Germany versus Great Britain for the gold medal.
Laura Deas finished the first run just .07 behind German Tina Hermann. Deas had a huge start and race-fastest run (58.56), put the pressure on Hermann. The German couldn’t make up from a deficient start time, and Deas took her first ever gold medal in the IBSF World Cup. Hermann finished second, while Jacqueline Lölling finished in the bronze position.
Sophia Griebel made it three Germans in the top four. Lelde Priedulena scored a career-best finish with a fifth place run, while Elena Nikitina finished sixth for Russia.
Jane Channell led the way for Canada with a seventh place finish, teammate Elisabeth Vathje had a very rough second second run to finish 13th. Donna Creighton finished just outside the top ten in 11th as the second British slider.
Annie O’Shea was the top-scoring American with a 12th place finish. O’Shea put down a very clean and quick second run after a disappointing first. World Cup rookie Kendall Wesenberg finished 18th, with a second run over a full second faster than her first.
Kim Meylemans had a blistering second run, and the Belgian World Cup rookie finished in the Top 10 in ninth.
